Pelvic Pain During Pregnancy: Common Doesn’t Mean Normal

Pregnancy brings many changes to your body, but feeling uncomfortable doesn’t always mean you simply have to put up with pain.

One thing I often hear from pregnant women is:

“Pelvic pain is just part of pregnancy, right?”

Pelvic pain is certainly common during pregnancy but common doesn’t necessarily mean normal.

Why does pelvic pain happen during pregnancy?

As your pregnancy progresses, your body goes through significant physical changes. Your growing baby changes your centre of gravity, your posture adapts, and increasing pressure is placed around your pelvis, hips and lower back.

Hormonal changes also help prepare your body for birth by affecting the ligaments around the pelvis.

Together, these changes may contribute to discomfort around the:

  • Pelvis and pubic area

  • Lower back

  • Hips and glutes

  • Sacroiliac (SI) joints

  • Inner thighs and groin

Some women may notice pain when walking, turning over in bed, climbing stairs, getting out of the car, or standing on one leg.

You don’t always have to “just live with it”

Pregnancy-related pelvic pain can have many different causes, so understanding what may be contributing to your discomfort is important.

For some women, reducing muscular tension and supporting the areas working harder during pregnancy can help them feel more comfortable and move more easily.

Pregnancy massage may help relieve tension through the lower back, hips and glutes while providing a comfortable environment for the body to relax.

At Healing Time Sydney, pregnancy massage is adapted to each stage of pregnancy and to how your body is feeling on the day.

When should you seek medical advice?

Massage can be a supportive part of pregnancy care, but it is not a replacement for medical assessment.

If your pelvic pain is severe, sudden, getting progressively worse, affecting your ability to walk, or accompanied by symptoms such as bleeding, contractions, fever or feeling unwell, speak with your doctor, midwife or other qualified healthcare professional.

You may also benefit from assessment by a physiotherapist experienced in pregnancy and pelvic health.

“Listen to your body”

Every pregnancy is different.

You may experience some aches and changes as your body adapts, but you don’t need to automatically dismiss persistent pain simply because you’re pregnant.

Common doesn’t always mean normal and you deserve support throughout your pregnancy.

Healing Time Sydney provides pregnancy and prenatal massage in Sydney, with treatments tailored to support comfort and relaxation throughout pregnancy.
